Shadow Generations Review

[This Review Contains game content spoilers, but no story spoilers]

On the year of shadow SEGA presents us with a new standalone title for the troubled anti-hero, finally fleshing out the characther’s past and giving a conclusion to his backstory, allowing the characther to move forward without the need go back to it’s past. That being said, Shadow Generations is a great game that and the minor “problems” don’t diminish much from the final experience.

The Plot

Shadow and Maria Robotnik

This is the heaviest story we’ve had since SA2. Black Doom and time eater fucks some shit up and Shadow ends up on white space, having to relive his past and defeat black doom. It is a solid story for shadow and it finally finishes his characther arc.

The Gameplay

Shadow’s controls are very diferent from sonic’s. Altough they retain the Generations feel, him movement is very snappy, and he also does not move as fast as sonic, but the levels are made in such a way that his movement options and various abilities that you collect troughout the game flow well.

Levels and Hub World

Troughout the game we revisit many levels from shadow’s past and future, such as Space Colony Ark, Rail Canyon, Kingdom valley and Oh God Radical Highway. So much of it, Thankfully it is one of the most beautifull areas of the game. The levels have a mix of linear and open gameplay, altough the open part could use a bit more work.

Shadow Generations Hub World

Unlike Sonic Generations, the Hub World is a large open area full of plataforming challenges and room to move around, very reminiscent of sonic frontiers or games like goat simulator. It adds the amazing ability to horse around, which is a bonus point to the game.

The boss batlles

It is what you’d expect from a modern sonic game. Easy Bosses and On the rails gameplay. This is where most of the point deductions come from. Yes, the are sick as fuck, but they are not heavy on player input, the Biolizard and Mephilis ones being the more demanding on that regard. Metal Overlord and the final boss are really on the rails, but have good music in compensation.

Mephilis Bossfight

Overall, a short 7 hour game, but it is what a game should be: Fun. So it earns a great 8/10.
